Sight of the Chain always brings with it self-consciousness; no one can look at the Gold Chain without thinking about where they fit into the world in relation to it. We knew that by keeping our eyes affixed to it, we could transcend self-consciousness and accrue a deeper understanding of where our robot belonged in our world, and where, in turn, we belonged as its makers.
